SCALE NOT GIVEN

Error In Geography Paper SCHOOL CERTIFICATE EXAMINATION PA WELLINGTON, Dec. 11. The Education Department announced today that an error had occurred in the geography paper for the school certificate examination through the omission of the scale from two maps supplied with the question, and that the examiner had been instructed to take this into account in marking the papers. “ Only three complaints from schools have been received by the department,” said the statement. “In the question on the reading and interpretation of topographical maps the scale was omitted from the two maps. Although the setting of the papers was begun early in the year, unexpected difficulties involved in the preparation of the maps resulted in this sheet not being ready for distribution until the eve of the examination, leaving no time for a final check by the examiner. Steps will be taken to avoid such a situation arising in the future. “ There was sufficient evidence given on the maps for candidates to answer adequately the sub-question about the scale, and, according to the examiner, the candidates whose papers he has already marked do not appear to have been misled by the omission of the scale “ Nevertheless, the examiner has been instructed to take this omission into account in the marking of the papers and to give special consideration to any candidate who appears to have been affected by this sub-question,” concluded the statement.
