Harry Gold, a research chemist, wa* sentenced in Philadelphia today to 30 years' imprisonment as self-confessed courier of a Russian atomic spy ring. He told the court his crime was “a terrible mistake.”
Judge James McCraney sentenced Gold to two terms of 30 years each, to run concurrently, on two charges of espionage in time of war. Gold said he had a deep and horrible remorse. He had received a scrupulously fair trial, and good treatment from the Government investigators and prison authorities. “This could not have happened In the Soviet." he added. Gold, who admitted acting as courier between the British spy, Klaus Fuchs, and the Russians, gave evidence against others in the spy ring.
