Gibraltar “At Mercy Of Spain”

NZPA—Copyright

Rec. 0.15 a.m. MADRID, Dec. 10. General Franco, the head of the Spanish State, called for the return of Gibraltar, but said the British colony was not “ worth a war.” In an interview published by the Falangist newspaper. Arriba, General Franco declared that modern weapons had placed Gibraltar completely at Spain’s mercy. “It is a fruit which is ripe and ready to fall. In decadent days it suited our Government to avoid the issue of the return of Gibraltar, but this is no 'longer possible under our movement,” he said, Observers in Madrid considered the declaration as a move to make it clear that Spanish demands must be considered if Spain is to play a part in the defence of Western Europe. The Spanish press and radio have been stressing the demand since the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit to Gibraltar on November 23 to inaugurate the new Legislative Council there.
