BRIGHT BATTING

Fourteen Sixes In Two Days

MCC IN QUEENSLAND

NZPA—Copyright TOOWOOMBA, Rec. 6.55 p.m. Dec. 9. Seven more 6’s were scored today in the match between the MCC and a Queensland country eleven, making a total of 14 in two days. The Country captain, Tommy Allen, who has four Sheffield Shield centuries to his credit, distinguished himself by scoring two 6’s in his total of 85 runs, which also included 10 4’s. He was the only real batsman in the Country team, which was even worse off for bowlers.

Although Compton could have forced the Country team to follow on when it trailed by 208 runs on the first innings, he agreed to bat again at Allen’s request because the crowd of 5000 had come especially to see the Englishmen. None of the spectators was disappointed, because in the first halfhour Simpson hit two 6’s and Sheppard one in an opening partnership which quickly produced 54 runs. . Gilbert Parkhouse, with 58 (one 6 and three 4’s), Godfrey Eyans 38 (one 6 and five 4’s) and Trevor Bailey 63 not out (eight 4’s) also contributed to the high rate of scoring. The greatest disappointment of the match, which was put on merely as an exhibition by the Englishmen, was the double failure of Brian Close, who made a duck in each innings. The match was drawn.
