WARM WELCOME
New Salvation Army Leaders A warm welcome was given to Lieutenant-commissioner R. A. Hoggard, the new territorial commander for the Salvation Army in New Zealand, and Mrs Hoggard, in the Dunedin Fortress on Saturday _ night. Commissioner Hoggard arrived in New Zealand a week ago from Chicago, via Great Britain. In Chicago he had held the position as chief secretary for the central territory of the United State 3. Among those present to welcome the Commissioner and Mrs Hoggard were the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs L. M. Wright (on behalf of the city): Mrs K. Cameron (representing all women’s organisations in the city); Principal A. L. Haddon (on behalf of the churches in the city); and the Divisional Commander at Dunedin, Major H. Goffin (representing the Salvationists of Otago and Southland, who comprise the Southern Division). In reply to the speeches of welcome, Commissioner Hoggard said that he had received no more warm or sincere welcome than at the Dunedin Citadel. We have reached /a very critical stage in the development of the Salvation Army,” said Commissioner Hoggard. “We are now in the second generation of this movement and we must maintain the fibres of Salvationism at all cost.” Commissioner Hoggard said that the principles of the Army were the same, but the methods used had changed. He then went on to describe the work of one particular section of the Salvation Army in Chicago, which conducted a haven known as the “ Harbour Light” where derelicts and alcoholics might find refuge. “The ‘Harbour Light’ has saved many people,” said Commissioner Hoggard. Mrs Hoggard said that she was very glad to be present. “ I am glad to be a Salvationist, but what is more I am proud to be a Salvationist by conviction,” she said.
