BAILLIE CUP
Oamaru’s First Win
For the first time since the cup was presented three years ago the Oamaru Yacht and Power Boat Club won the Bailie Memorial Cup from the Timaru Club in a yachting regatta at Oamaru on Saturday. There was a boisterous northwest wind, and several capsizes occurred. The winning boat, Lynda, skippered by G. Ferris, of Oamaru, capsized after crossing +he finishing line. A course which took the boats outside the Oamaru harbour as far north as the Oamaru gasworks was set. Most of the boats got away to a good start, with the Galina (K. Kingan, Timaru) in the lead, with Lynda close behind, and Clarence (K. Sherwin, Oamaru) third. The Crest (G. Jamieson, Oamaru) failed to start. Three boats, the Gypsy, Caroline and Lynda, capsized. It was intended to hold a Sanders Cup trial between the Crest, Gallina and Allegro, but the boisterous conditions prevented this from taking place. A .large crowd watched the race which resulted:— Lynda (G. Ferris, Oamaru), 20min. 1; Heather (Nuttall brothers, Oamaru), 22, 2; Noyna (W. Begg, Timaru), 24, 3: Annette (K. Hodge, Oamaru), 26, 4; Cavalier (Robson brothers, Timaru), 271, 5: ene (K Sherwin, Oamaru), 29, 6; Blondie (M. Kay), 38, 7.
