HORORATA MEETING

Slippery Track Causes Cancellation PA CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 10. The falling of six horses on a slight bend approaching the straight on the Hororata racecourse caused the centennial meeting of the Hororata Racing Club to be cancelled on Saturday. The falls took place during the running of the first race, the Novice Stakes. The horses involved were Cardross (ridden by C. C. Stokes). Kandahar (W. D. Skelton), Laloma Rua (L. H. Barr), Pedas (D. F. Coombe), Pergamena (A. C. Peake) and Royal Saleve (C. McDonald). After taking evidence from the jockeys involved in the falls, the Judicial Committee inspected the track, accompanied by L. J. Ellis, president of the Canterbury branch of the Jockeys’ Association, and A. J. Stokes. A meeting of the full committee of the club then decided reluctantly to cancel the remainder of the races because of the possible danger to jockeys from the slippery nature of the track, due to heavy rain on the hard surface. The stipendiary steward, Mr H. Prins, had also recommended the cancellation of the meeting. All investments on the second race, on which the totalisator had opened, and also doubles investments, were refunded. The committee decided to make an application to race again on January 27. Several trotting trainers maintained that the course would be suitable to race on, and decided to try it out. While four of them were attempting to take the turn going out of the straight, all came down. " The decision of the committee was fully vindicated,” said Mr G. H. Grigg, the p-ociaent, when commenting on the incident. Result:— NOVICE STAKES, Of £2OO. Seven furlongs. 7/7—Dan Kelly, 8.7 (F. H. Skelton) .. 1 3/3—Sunda, 8.7 (D. J.
