Ferguson Beats Dixon
In the 36-hole final of the Otago Golf Club Championship, played at Balmacewen yesterday, T. B. Ferguson defeated F. W. Dixon 7 and 6. At the conclusion of the morning round Ferguson, who was round in 75 to Dixon’s 78, was 2 up. In spite of the strong wind, the golf was of a high standard, Ferguson being more accurate on and around the greens. He holed brilliant long putts at the eleventh hole, where he was laid a half stymie, and at the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth holes.
Over the first nine holes in the afternoon Dixon was guilty of too many errors, and Ferguson increased his lead to 5 up at the turn. He was out in 38 to Dixon’s 42. Ferguson then went on to win the short twenty-eighth hole with a par 3, and after an indifferent half at Tipperary, where both three-putted, he holed another long putt at McGlashan’s to win the championship 7 and 6. Ferguson has one previous win in the Otago Club Championship. In 1937 he defeated T. W. Wight in the final. In the semi-finals, played on Saturday, F. W. Dixon beat A. Gibbs 1 up, and T. B. Ferguson beat B. V. Wright 3 and 2.
A Canadian Foursome Bogey Handicap completition, played on Saturday, was won by H. R. Cameron and J. M. Ringland with a score of 5 up. Other leading scores: E, F. Northcroft and K. D. Foxton 4 up, E. O. Dawson and H. M. James 2 up, B. W. Cleland and G. D. Moore all square, J. A. Scouler and P. M. White all square, A. J. S. Smith and G. W. Bowron all square.
