PA AUCKLAND, Dec. 10. Contrary to public opinion, sexual and drunkeness offences were not by far the most numerous committed by Maoris, said Mr C. H. Bennett, the Deputy Controller of Maori - Affairs today. He was speaking on crime amongst the Maoris' at a meetirig in Auckland called to discuss the question. Mr Bennett said that ftv weeks he had done a great deal of research among me at Mount Eden Prison at the re-me.-t. of the Department of Social Studies at . Victoria University College. “I studied the criminal careers of 67 prisoners,” he said, ” and the various crimes they had committed during the years total 1505. Of that number, only 16 are sexual crimes and only 15 drunkeness charges, but 1118 are crimes of stealing in its different forms.”
