BLAIR ATHOL WINS

Otago Marching Championships

SUCCESS IN A GRADE Fine weather favoured the Otago Marching- Association’s championships held at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday afternoon, but a blustery \bind was unpleasant at times. The competition was divided into A and B Grades, 11 teams competing in each. Attractive uniforms and precision marching, combined with music played by the St. Kilda Municipal Brass Band and the Dunedin Burns Pipe Band, made the occasion a really impressive one. Some teams even possessed mas-cots—-little girls dressed in the team’s uniform—to bring them luck. Once again the Blair Athol team, coached by Mr H. Cameron, secured a clear win in the A Grade section, while Ravensbourne won by six points from United (Invercargill) in the B Grade section. All teams in the A Grade section marched well and the judges considered that the competition was of a good standard. The leaders’ displays were well executed. The first and second teams in the B Grade competition, Ravensbourne and United (Invercargill) . showed more snap than the other teams and would have put up a good performance in the A Grade section. Inexperience was the downfall of many B Grade teams, errors in wheels, foot movements, arm swing, covering and dressing being evident. Only six points separated Ravensbourne and United.
