Conviction Of Alger Hiss Confirmed
NEW YORK, Dec. V. The Appeals .Court today confirmed the conviction of Alger Hiss, a former high State Department official, on a charge of perjury. Hiss, aged 46. was convicted last January of lying when he denied slipping Government secrets to a courier for a Soviet spy ring. Hiss was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, but he has been free on bail pending the appeal. Mr Chester Lane, attorney for Hiss, said the appeal would be taken to the Supreme Court.
