COUNCIL ELECTIONS

Sir,—An advertisement issued by the Citizens’ Association, “ No. 2 Don’t," states that the responsibility for choosing candidates with capacity, integrity, and dependability to safeguard the city’s £20,000,000 assets rests with the individual electors. Electors are not likely to forget that, and will not return the Citizens’ candidates. who have as a memorial to their financial and business ability the recent sale of seven houses in Leith street for the sum of £2lB each. —I am, etc., Returned Serviceman.

Sir,—No doubt we can all find something to growl about In civic administration, while taking all the good work for granted. I could agree with “ Woman Ratepayer ” in the matter of the destruction of Littlebourne House, the site of which, after all, does not appear to be required for the new highway. But I should like to proffer a word of thanks to fellow.citizens who give us their services without payment and often with little or no thanks. May I suggest that " Woman Ratepayer’s" detraction of the Public Library is rather unreasonable On a rateable value of £6B I find that the anathematised 3d rate costs me 4d a week, or Id in every 6s 8d of my total rates. For 4d a week I have the choice of the world's best literature on all subjects, for consultation or borrowing, Including one of the best Dominion collections of New Zealand books. I should imagine It is not possible for every book to be officially read before it Is placed on the shelves. According to the lists in “ Books in Dunedin,” accessions seem to number about a couple of hundred a month. Should a reader discover anything offensive to moral decency, and show the book to the city librarian, no doubt he may be trusted to take the proper action. In our Public Library Dunedin citizens have an amenity of which we may well be proud—it was described as ” the best in New Zealand ’’ by a recent visiting authority.—l am, etc., A. H. R.
