THE MILKMAN'S COMPLAINT

Sir, —For the whole of the winter, street lights have been switched off between midnight and 5 a.m. For milkmen this made an awkward job more difficult, and for many of us it meant working a large part of our runs in a complete blackout till 5 a.m., when the lights came on and remained on till 7 a.m. Howevef-, now that it is nearly light at 5 a.m., street lighting remains off from midnight onwards. If it was possible to have street lighting between 5 and 7 a.m. in midwinter, when the position was really serious, surely it should be possible to have street lighting between 4 and 5 a.m. at a, time when restrictions have been considerably relaxed in other directions. The final straw occurred to me this morning when, during the blackout and with both hands full of bottles, I'took a nose dive over an ashcan carefully placed in the centre of the footpath. Result—a three-point landing amidst a shower of broken glass, and this letter. —I am, etc., Flying Blind.
