South Otago Beats Eastern Districts RUGBY AT BALCLUTHA Special to the Daily Times BALCLUTHA. Aug. 20. Though weakened by the absence of six players with the Otago Sub-unions’ Eugby touring team, South Otago on Saturday successfully defended the Topp Cup, defeating Eastern Districts by 11 points to nil at Balclutha. The game was a bright one, particularly in the second spell. There was no score in the first half, during which Eastern Districts held a slight territorial advantage. In the second spell the South Otago forwards gained the upper hand and the inside backs showed better combination. The Eastern backs did not impress as an attacking unit, but Kerr, at full-back, and Townsend, centre three-quarter, played well. Pauling and Bradley were the best of the forwards. The All Black. J. R. McNab, led the South Otago pack and he, together with D. Morgan and I. -Mclntosh, played well throughout. C. Simpson and J. McLachlan were the best of the South Otago Tries were scored for South Otago by Morgan (21 and Simpson, the latter converting one. The referee was Mr T. Tsukigawa. In a Second Grade curtain-raiser, Clinton defeated Clutha by 3 points to nil.
