HOUSING SCHEME

Delay In Development EXPLANATION BY COUNCILLOR The delay in the development of the State housing settlement at Halfway Bush, Wakari, arose because no decision had yet been reached by the State Housing Construction Department in Wellington when the plans would be ppt into operation, said the chairman of the Works Committee of the City Council, Cr Ireland, replying last night to a question asked by Cr Sidey at the meeting of the council three weeks ago. ' Cr Sidey had said that a recent press report had suggested that it was the fault of the council that the Government could not go ahead with the development of the area. He asked for a full statement so that the public could be made aware of the position. Cr Ireland said that the matter was still under discussion by the State Housing Construction Departments in Wellington and Dunedin. No decision had been made in Wellington, and the Dunedin office was waiting for the word to go ahead. “The land lies considerably above the city high level water supply. Expensive drainage is required, and until the City Council has word from the Housing Construction Department it cannot proceed with these installations,” Cr Ireland said. “A suggestion that the council should go ahead and install the sewerage and drainage is absurd. It would cost £IOO,OOO. It would run past the Wakari Hospital and go to Frederick street by way of School Creek.”
