Two Famous Literary Men Have Birthdays This Week

LONDON, July 23. Two of Britain’s most famous literary figures, George Bernard Shaw and Hilaire Belloc, celebrate their birthdays this week. Mr Shaw will be 94 on Wednesday and Mr Belloc 80 on Thursday. The two men are old friends, but although they live not more than 70 miles apart, have not seen each other since the war. Mr Belloc has done no writing since 1942, when he had a serious illness, although Mr Shaw though 14 years his senior, is still writing. Mr Belloc told a friend who visited him last week that he did not think his work would live, but that he thought some of his ideas would do so—although' he added, characteristically, that they would probably be credited to someone else. He said that he did not care what happened to his prose works, but he hoped that after he was dead people would read his verse.
