FLOODING NOT LIKELY

Thaw Causes Rivers To Rise In Otago Although there was a sudden thaw in high-country areas in Otago and Southland during the week-end and yesterday, there does-not seem to be much chance of rivers flooding at present. There was a small rise in the Clutha River in Central Otago on Sunday, and it rose slightly at Balclutha yesterday, but the level was not unusual for this time of the year. The warm conditions experienced after rain at the week-end continued in the Queenstown and Alexandra areas yesterday, but the weather report predicted snow last night. The Oreti River at Lumsden rose quickly during the week-end, and was several feet above normal yesterday. Warnings were issued on Saturday night and stock was hurriedly moved from low-lying areas.
