NATIONAL TENNIS RANKINGS

Sports Commentar

Three Otago Players Included The New Zealand Lawn Tennis ranking list announced last week Jives places to three Otago players. J. E. Robson, who was runner-up to the Australian, G. Worthington, in the New Zealand championship, takes first place for the second successive year, and Misses Marion Robertson and Margaret Pyle occupy ninth and tenth places respectively on the women’s ladder.

The men’s ranking calls for more comment than the women's, says the Daily Times lawn tennis writer. J. A. Barry has been preferred in second position to R. S. McKenzie. set, was, however, the best against the Australian by a New Zealand player. One of the most notable performances is that of the veteran C. W. Angas in winning eighth place. A. C. Williams, of Auckland, has rocketted into fifth place. Miss Robertson reached the quarter finals in the singles and won the doubles in the national championships. Her performances on grass have always been superior to l}er hardcourt play. Miss Pyle has won her recognition through hard work. Her fine effort against the New Zealand champion, Miss Margaret Beverley in the quarter finals in which she was eliminated 4—6, and her previous defeat of Miss Redwood 6—l, 6—4, probably won her well-deserved recognition.

The three Otago players are young, and there is every reason why they should hold their positions for several years. >
