LAND OF OPPORTUNITY

Sir,—" Matilda ” makes no attempt to deny the charges I have made for tha simple reason that he cannot do so. His statement that he condemned the Labour Government because they were sailing under false colours is stupid. He brings no evidence to support it. He well re« members that in 1946 the Nationalists decided overnight to suspend their hostility and endorse the whole of Labour’s humanitarian legislation. Their new scheme was to pose as the champions of . the weak. Today this party is the Government of the country, and the electors have already learned to their sorrow how . much faith can be put in Nationalist promises. Is it necessary to ask who sailed under false colours? “ Matilda ’* has placed himself In an untenable position. He condemns and approves at one and the same time. In spite of the fact that the Government has turned and fled in every enepunter with the Communists, it has his support because he says it is composed chiefly of working men. Could anything be more pathetic? It may be news for him to know that I am a descendant of early settlers in this country, that I am a returned soldier from World War I, and that in my loyalty to King and country I- take second place to no man, not even to a " Matilda.” I have criticised his political views and actions and will do so again if necessary. That he strongly resents criticism is shown by the amount of abuse in his replies. If his motives in the first instance in inaugurating this campaign were sincere, let him cut out his political bias, show less bitterness and a little more tolerance. —I am, etc., Common Sense.
