STATE FINANCE
Sir,—Your correspondent “ M." is not to be taken seriously. Judged by his letter of July 15, he is not a genuine inquirer, for he lacks the first essentials of genuine inquiry, sincerity and humility. What his last effort reveals looks more like wilful misrepresentation or else sheer stupidity allied to impudence. I did not write, or infer, that “ everybody was doing " what “ M.” supposed he might do—the language used by by “ M.” is loose and therefore useless in any argument. I have never “ complained that no business can be don. with a bank without incurring debt,” and no one expects “ the banker to give everybody everything for nothing." Further, I suggest' that “M.” may come out from the shop of grocer, butcher or baker with debt-free goods if he pays for them before leaving, but these household transactions are quite Irrelevant to the argument regarding State finance. I n n d it unprofitable to tax your, space further, waging wordy warfare with either flippancy or stupidity.—l am, etc., Truth.
