APPOINTMENTS MADE PA WELLINGTON, July 13. The Prime Minister, Mr Holland,

has announced the appointment of Mr Thomas Charles Atkinson His- - lop, C.M.G., of Wellington, as High Commissioner for New Zealand in Canada, and Mr George Edwin Lisle Alderton, of Auckland, as High Commissioner for New Zealand in Australia. “ These two posts have been vacant for some time, and very careful consideration has been given to the selec-

tion of the best men available to fill them,” said Mr Holland. “The Government has every confidence that these two men will worthily represent their country.” Mr Alderton is a barrister and solicitor, and is a partner in an Auckland legal firm. He was an Auckland provincial hockey representative, and was chairman of the Transport Appeal Board in 1933 and of the Transport Co-ordination Board from 1934 to 1936. He served in the First World War and again with the navy in the Second World War.

Mr Hislop was Mayor of Wellington from 1931 to 1944, and was first elected to the Wellington City , Council in 1912. Born in Wellington in 1888, he was educated at Wellington College and Cambridge University. He is a partner in a Wellington firm of barristers and solicitors, and has occupied many important public positions. He is a past president of the Wellington Law Society,and was chairman of directors of the Wellington Provincial Centennial Council and the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition Company.
