GRAVE THREAT TO SAFETY OF AUSTRALIA

NZPA—Copyright

Rec. 9.50 p.m. CANBERRA. May 17. The Federal Prime Minister, Mr Menzies. said in the House of Representatives that Communist activities and planning in South-east Asia contribute a grave threat to the safety of Australia. Mr Menzies said: “The position in Malaya is undoubtedly very serious. The conclusions are that the activities of Communist bandits in Malaya are in no way related to any nationalist movement, that they are directly associated with Communist activities in other Asiatic countries, that there is a general movement in a south-east-erly direction on the part of Communist activities and planning, and that all these things added together constitute a grave threat to the safety of Australia, We are in constant communication with other British Governments concerning the position as it develops.”
