INVESTIGATION SOUGHT
Charges Against BBC Staff Members NZPA—Copyright Rec. 6.50 p.m. LONDON, May 16. Sir William Haley, Director-general of the BBC, has asked the Director of Public Prosecutions to investigate charges of bribery and corruption made against certain members of the staff of the corporation by two members of the House of Commons. Wing Commander Geoffrey Cooper, Labour member for West Middlesbrough, and Air Commodore Arthur Harvey, Conservative member for Macclesfield. The allegations followed the BBC’s action last autumn in dropping the radio show, “ Opportunity Knocks.” featuring Hughie Green. This show is now being heard as a sponsored programme from Radio Luxembourg. In a statement. Wing Commander Cooper said he was not sure that Sir William Haley had taken correct action in handing the papers to the Director of Public Prosecutions. What was wanted was a public inquiry, and if this was not forthcoming he would raise the matter in the House of Commons.
