POWER SAVING

Dunedin Manufacturers’ Achievement Sixty per cent, of the manufacturers in the Dunedin area are saving more electricity than is required. The Otago-Southland Manufacturers’ Association yesterday supplied the City Electricity Department with details of the power-saving effort by 60 per cent, of its members in the Dunedin area. The assistant city electrical engineer, Mr A. H. Dickson, told the Daily Times that the actual figures returned by the manufacturers proved that they were saving more than the required 22J per cent, of the normal demand.

“ It is incumbent on the householders to save power as well,” Mr Dickson emphasised. He drew the attention of the public to the statement by the general manager of the State Hydroelectric Department, Mr A. E. Davenport, published in the Daily Times yesterday, “ that continued excess consumption over allocation could lead only to a very serious situation in that the usable water storage may be exhausted by the end of July.” On Monday the power used in Dunedin exceeded the quota by 10.33 per cent. The level of Lake Mahinerangi stood at 82ft 4in yesterday morning—a fall of an inch in 24 hours.
