”UNIVERSAL” PENSIONS

Sir, —I think it is high time Mr Holland did something about the above pensions. How utterly ridiculous giving pensions to the wealthy. This pension could have a means test and thus save a big expenditure in social security. I cannot understand any Government handing over the people’s money as a pension to every wealthy person in New Zealand. It looks as though we are just going to feel what all these hand-outs by the last Government have done. I always thought that the Labour Government were out to assist the poorer people of the country, but it looks as though this was not the case. However, I hope our present Prime Minister will see that people who are in real need of extra help will be the ones to get it and not the already wealthy ones. How about extra for the invalid soldier who helped to keep things going and gave up everything to go and stop the foe from invading our shores? —I am. etc., Warwick.
