GREAT HEIGHT REACHED
Weather Balloons At Airfield PA AUCKLAND, May 13: A weather balloon was tracked by radar to a height of 100,180 ft at Whenuapai this morning before it burst in the upper atmosphere. Light upper-strata winds are believed to be the reason for higher-recorded altitudes in the past three days. A balloon was tracked to 92„940ft yesterday and 92,950 ft the day before. Before that the greatest recorded height was about 84,000 ft. The balloons are specially built of high-class rubber and are about sft wide when filled with oxygen at ground level. They increase in size as they go up and are between 18ft and 20ft across when they burst. Visual and radar tracking of balloons gives observers much valuable information of high altitude winds.
