PORT WELL BEATEN

Training College Superior /Port Chalmers was soundly beaten In a fast and spirited game by a superior Training College team at Port Chalmers. At first, play was dominated by the forwards, and the exchanges were fairly even, although the Training College backs provided some bright, flashing movements and came close to scoring on more than one occasion. Later, the College pack, led by G. Jones, showed its superiority In the rucks, line outs and scrums, and the College backs, with A. J. Robinson. R. Parata and A. Lonsdale prominent, initiated some excellent movements. The College half-back, M. Daniels, gave brief glimpses of form, but he did not seem at ease against the spoiling tactics of the Port Chalmers forwards. I. Aitkenhead, who changed from the wing berth to first five-eighth in the second half, gave sound displays in both positions, while Jones, G. Anderson, and J. McConochie were most noticeable In the Training College pack, which worked hard throughout, and combined well with the G. Forgie, the tall Port Chalmers forward, who played effectively in the line outs, was always in the van of the Port attack and E. Perry, who played on the wing, did some determined running. The other wing, R. Flynn, was sound both on attack and defence. D. Grant, the Port centre, signalled his return to the playing field by starting many back movements. Both full-backs, T. A. Freeman, and R. Wellgreen, were safe, but Freeman's play was more spectacular. Besides handling and kicking well, he converted three tries and a goal from a penalty. _ . , For Training College, Rpbinson (2), Jones and Parata scored tries and Freeman kicked a goal from a penalty and converted three tries. E. Perry scored a try and D. Grant converted it and kicked a goal from a penalty for Port Chalmers. _ „ _ ~ The referee was Mr S. McConnell.
