SPEED DETECTOR

Magisterial Sanction

ADAPTION OF SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLES

PA HAMILTON, May 12. “It is my considered opinion, based on long experience that there _ is nothing unfair in the ues of the micro wave speed detector for the purpose for which it is being used by the .Transport Department, said Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Hamilton yesterday, when he gave his reserved decision concerning two traffic offenders who had been prosecuted on April 20 as a result of detection by this means. “Judgement was reserved in these cases only because the offences charged had been detected by means of this instrument, and it was said that its use had been subject to some adverse criticism in another part of New Zealand,” said the magistrate. “ The detector is nothing but the adaptation of scientific principles to checking the ■speed' of motor vehicles, and procuring • evidence for the prosecution of offenders. In this respect it is more accurate and reliable than the old method of checking speed over a measured • distance by means of stop watches.” i The magistrate fined the defendants £3 each. ■
