GUILTY OF FRAUD
Five Charges Admitted
TERM OF IMPRISONMENT IMPOSED
A sentence of six months’ imprisonment with hard labour to be followed by detention, for reformative purposes for a period not exceeding two years was imposed yesterday on Henry Walton Phillips, aged 35, w-hen he appeared before Mr J. G. Warrington. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court. Phillips pleaded guilty to five charges of obtaining money and goods with intent to defraud while he was still serving a term of probation for four offences committed previously. He was dealt with on the nine charges, and Mr Warrington directed that he should be brought before the Supreme Court to be dealt with as an habitual criminal. Chief Detective Hall, who prosecuted, said that between April 12 and May 4, Phillips had obtained shoes and shirts, and money to a total value of £33 3s with intent to defraud. The accused was represented by Mr C. J. L. White. Obscene Language Douglas James Sidon, a labourer, aged 22 and Gordon Frederick Grigg, a motor driver, aged 27, both pleaded guilty to using obscene language in London street on Thursday, and were each fined £5. Breach of Probation A plea of guilty to a Charge of a breach of probation was entered by Frederick Andrew Cumberbeach, a farm labourer, aged 36. He admitted failing to report at Middlemarch on Thursday. He was convicted and fined £5. Ship Desertion
An English seaman, Arthur Eric Wootton, aged 25, pleaded guilty to deserting the steamship Fordsdale ftt Auckland on April 20. He was sentenced to one month s imprisonment.
