America Plans Dollar Aid For South-east Asia
NZPA—Copyright WASHINGTON, May 11. The United States State Department is working on plans for the immediate implementation of a 60,000,000-dollars aid programme for South-east Asia. This was officially announced today. The Under-Secretary of State, Mr James Webb, said that the United States planned immediate military and economic aid to South-east Asia. “ The department,” he said, “ plans to implemfent at once a recommendation by the special survey mission that about 60,000.000 dollars be used for economic heln to the area.” The military needs of the area would be met by drawing on a fund of 75,000,000 dollars approved by Congress for use in the general area of China at President Truman’s discretion. Mr Webb did not give details of the distribution of aid. The Secretary of State. Mr Dean Acheson, said in Paris on Monday that American economic and military help would be sent immediately to French Indo-China. The recommendations by the special survey mission have not been made public, but the mission is understood to have proposed economic aid to Indo-China, Indonesia, Siam. Burma and Malaya. ’’
