AMERICAN “KNOWLEDGE”
Facts Of Baltic Plane Incident Associated Press—Copyright WASHINGTON, Rec. 0.5 a.m. May 11. The United States would not be surprised if Moscow eventually produces an alleged confession from a member of the crew of the American Navy Privateer plane lost in the Baltic on April 8. A Government official in a position to know said this today on the basis of what he asserted to be American “ knowledge ” that Rus- ». sia made prompt efforts to salvage remnants of the plane and to pick up its 10 occupants dead or alive. He said also that United States officials knew these facts:—Four Russian fighters opened fire from the rear of the slower American plane, the attack took place over the Baltic Sea over 30 miles from the coast, and the plane was on fire before it hit the water. This official said the Government would not reveal how it got the information.
