This memorial to all airmen lost during operations from bases in the United Kingdom and North-west Europe was designed by Mr Edward Maufe, R.A., for the Imperial War Graves Commission. It is to stand on Cooper’s Hill, looking over the River Thames at Runnymede, Berkshire, a famous beauty spot. The design consists of a shrine, with a cloister embracing it, the shrine as a place for contemplation and the cloister to record the names of 20,000 airmen. There will be 32 chapels in the cloister over the doorways, of which will be carved in stone the arms of the Commonwealth countries.
