BIRTHDAYS TODAY

Two of Dunedin’s best-known citizens, the Mayor, Sir Donald Cameron, and Dr J. A. Hanan, will celebrate their birthdays today. Sir Donald has reached the age of 73 years and Dr Hanan is 82. Dr Hanan is at present a member of the Legislative Council, and has been a member of the Legislature for 50 years. Ise was formerly Minister of Education and Justice and' was the Chancellor of the University of New Zealand frbm 1935 to 1944. His interests today are devoted to world affairs rather than local matters, and he still possesses the mental vigour of a much younger man. “I am deeply interested in international questions, upon the wise solution of which depends the destiny of mankind,” he said in an interview yesterday. , Sir Donald has been Mayor of Dunedin since 1944, and he has always played a prominent part in the affairs of the city. Apart from his civic life, which commenced in 1906, when he was elected to the St. Kilda Borough Council, he has been closely identified with the commercial, sports and religious activities in the city. During the war, he was chairman of the No. II Armed Forces Appeal Board. It is understood that in both cases the celebrations will be of a private nature.
