The board which was set up by the Minister of Railways, Mr Goosman, to conduct a departmental inquiry into the alleged excessive speed of an Easter excursion train at one stage of the journey between Picton and Christchurch held a sitting in Blenheim yesterday. The inquiry is not open to the public or the press. Further sittings are to be held in Christchurch, after which the board will report to the general manager of railways, who in turn will report to the Minister. After the return to Christchurch of a special train which left Picton at 7 p.m. on April 8, complaints were made by some passengers alleging excessive speed near the Blind River, where the South Island Main Trunk express was derailed on February 25, 1948.
