QUEEN LAUNCHES NEW ARK ROYAL
Queen Elizabeth performing the launching ceremony of the new aircraft carrier Ark Royal. Officers and men who served in the Ark Royal that was sunk during the war were among the guests in the launching yard at Birkenhead, Cheshire. The fourth ship to bear the name, the new aircraft carrier, is the second heaviest warship launched in Britain. She has a displacement of 36,000 tons compared with the war-time Ark Royal’s 22,000 tons.
