BRILLIANT HURDLER

Folkestone’s Record Folkstone, the topweight in the Waikato Hurdles, burst into tile limelight last season when he won three times over the battens in brilliant fashion, and in a row. The first of his successes was in a division of the Winter Hack Hurdles, of one mile and a-half, at the Waikato meeting. He carried 9.9 and won by six lengths. In the Panmure Hurdle Handicap at Ellerslie he won with 10.6, his winning margin being 12 lengths. He was raised to 11.4 in the Orakei Hurdles, of about one mile and three-quarters, and he was 14 lengths clear at the post. At Ellerslie last month he struck form again and won the Buckland Hurdle Handicap, of two miles, with 10.4 from Golden Reign 10.6 and Young Bob 9.10. He was well back in the early running but ran on solidly from the home turn to win by a nose. On Saturday, Golden Reign will meet him on 81b better terms and Young Bob comes in on 91b better terms. Folkestone is a five-year-old gelding by Defaulter from Great Memory, by Magnus from Retrospect by Autumnus from Telescope, by Martian from Weathereye, by Maxim from Galatea, by Apremont from Nautilus, by Traducer. Jottings Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting are due on Monday. Handicaps for the South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting will be declared on Monday and acceptances are due on Tuesday. Nominations for the minor events at the Great Northern meeting are due tomorrow. Salma Royal has been purchased by Mr J. Waters, of Mataura. and she is now being trained b.v R- E. McLellan at Invercargill. Smart Gallop Entrancing, who had to miss her Ashburton engagement because of a fall, is apparently all right again as she galloped half a mile in 49 4-ssec at Riccarton on Tuesday morning. She is engaged at the Amberley meeting on Saturday. Novice for Amberley At the Waimate meeting last month, Levant ran Paper Raid to a. head in the Trial Plate and if she reproduces that form in the Novice Stakes at Amberley she should pay a dividend again. Noted Mudlark The WJngatui-bred Blank Cheque, a half-brother by Salmagundi to Irish Note, is in strong work again and he will resume racing in the Taipua Handicap at the Otaki meeting on Saturday. A noted winter "horse, he is booked to race at the Trentham winter meeting in July. He can be expected to develop into a good winner. For Wingatui . Prefect, winner of the hurdle race at Ashburton on Saturday, is not going to be seriously raced over battens this season and is booked to race at Wingatui on the flat. His principal mission will be the Duke of Gloucester Cup, one of the feature events on the second day. He will be ridden by the Patearoa amateur horseman,' Mr E. R. Curtis, who has a good record in the saddle. At Amberley Golden Amber, who has not raced since the Churchill Stakes on the second day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, is down to resume in the Amberley Handicap on Saturday. She showed great promise in the early part of last season when she recorded some good placings in the major classic races before she went amiss. A four-year-old mare by Robin Goodfellow, she is out of Saldowa. and is a member of a good southern family. Her only success came as a two-year-old when she won the Iticcarton Pioneer Handicap, but there is every prospect of her winning her way to good handicap company. Big Team in Work The Invercargill owner-trainer, W. E. Hazlett, has a big team of jumpers in work and recent additions to his team include Wandering Light, Christian d’Or, Gunther and Nan. He also has two Royal Chief yearlings, a gelding from Soft Light (bv Siegfried from Kindly Light) and a gelding from Aurora Australis (by Salmagundi from Ruling Light), a solid race mare, who included among her successes the Hazlett Gold Cup and two Invercargill Cups. It is expected that the Hazlett stables will be strongly represented at the Dunedin meeting, where the team will include Kassai', Gay Music. St. Simper and others.
