Petition For Removal Of Two Ministers Is Presented In Commons

LONDON, May 8. Amid cheers and counter cheers from all sides of the House of Commons, Sir Waldron Smithers (Conservative) presented a petition seeking the removal from office “for ever” of the Secretary for War, Mr John Strachey, and the Minister of Defence, Mr Emanuel Shinwell. Sir Waldron said the petition had been signed by “ about 18,000 loyal subjects of his Majesty and signatures are still coming in.” The petitioners stated that they were “united in determination to uphold the strength of Britain and her prestige abroad.” The petition said the request for the removal of Mr Strachey and Mr Shinwell from office had been prompted by the increased Communist and Fascist activity in the world and by world confidence in Britain being shaken by the revelations of the Fuchs case.

“In view of their past records the continuance in office of the War Minister and the Deefnce Minister, who have in the past expressed their sympathy with Communism, is conducive to the increase of Communist and Fascist infiltration and activities in Britain and the consequent deterioration of Britain’s prestige on which the recovery of Britain depends,” said the petition.
