WOOLLEN GOODS
No “ Panic ” Buying POSITION IN DUNEDIN The announcement by the Prime Minister, Mr Holland, that the present subsidies on wool will be removed at the end of this season has not resulted in an increase in the purchase of woollen goods in Dunedin. Retailers said that the removal of the subsidies would not take place for some time, and the result would not be reflected in increased prices to customers for some weeks afterwards.
Knitting wool was the only commodity which showed an increased demand this week, but wools manufactured locally are always a popular line. Retailers thought that the increases in the prices of foodstuffs might have resulted in a depressing effect on the clothing and general haberdashery market, but this has not been the case. There has been no noticeable increase or decrease in sales, and business was described to the Daily Times as being normal in all respects.
