PRICE CONTROL
Abandonment Sought EFFECT OF SUBSIDY REMOVAL Special Correspondent WELLINGTON, May 9. In numerous industries and trades a case is now being made out for the abandonment of price controls. With the announcement of the elimination of subsidies from a wide range of items, traders are in a state of uncertainty about new price levels, not only for the goods directly involved, but also for others in which the removal of subsidies will be indirectly reflected The abolition of food subsidies has raised doubts about new price levels for numerous food products. The increased price for coal, and, consequently, for gas, will be reflected throughout industry. Higher rail freights will have a direct 'effect on all goods travelling by rail and an indirect effect on thousands of allied products. These factors, and on top of them the promised wage increases, have led industry and trade generally to prepare for a general upward movement in costs and prices and in many quarters have led to a renewal of applications to the Government for the removal of price control. In the meantime, it is expected that price orders will be issued making necessary adjustments on the controlled items immediately affected by the withdrawal of subsidies.
