WELL-EARNED SUCCESS

Resolute Should Have Bright Future Resolute won his first race since he was successful in the Hagley Hack Handicap at Riccarton on December 3 when he accounted for a useful field in the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday. After two placings in hack races at the Auckland Cup meeting, he was raced at the Wellington Cup meeting. In his two races there he ran well without getting into the money. After several placings, he ran second in the Great Easter Handicap. He was required to carry 71b over-weight ,and it was only in th\2 last stride that Pierre got the upper hand. In the Templeton Handicap on the second day of the meeting he finished third to Revelry and Faithful Pal after getting a bad run in the straight. He was placed twice at the Marlborough meeting before winning at Ashburton. Resolute has improved greatly since being trained by L. J. Ellis and he Is bred to go on to the best company. He is a four-yebr-old gelding by Robin Goodfellow from Realise, by Lackham from Moutoa Lady, by Spalpeen from Lady Moutoa, by Soult, tracing back to the Australian-bred mare. Moth, who founded a good winning family. Resolute is a member of the same family as Irish Note, holder of the New Zealand six furlong record. He may show up later over a middle distance, but he appears to be best suited over seven furlongs or a mile in the meantime. So far this season he has had 16 starts for two wins and eight minor placings.

Great Trek’s Sister, Peaseblossom, who upset calculations when she accounted for a useful sprint field at the Woodville meeting on Saturday, is a three-year-old half-sister to a brilliant young sprinter in Great Trek, who has been racing in Australia for some time now, Selas and Kathshara. Peaseblossom is by Robin Goddfellow and she should be‘more than useful next season. May Be Useful Roanne looks as though' she may develop more than useful form. She recorded a solid effort to finish a close second to Great Way in the Fairfield Handicap at Ashburton after receiving a rough passage over the last furlipng. She has now had a win and three placings in her last four starts. A three-year-old Beaulivre filly, she is trained at Blenheim by S. Landon-Lane. Silver Clipper at Last

Silver Clipper came into his own in the Trial Stakes at the Ashburton meeting, and his win was overdue. He had been placed in his previous three starts and now that he has struck winning form he may carry on. Owned by Mr E.. Aubrey, and trained at Oamaru by T. Hobbs, he is a three-year-old gelding by Airway from Silver Scene, by Night Raid from Silver Sail, by Paper Money from Tea Kettle, by Tea Tray. First in Open Company Bursar made an auspicious entry into open company when he accounted for the field in the May Handicap at the Woodville meeting on Saturday, and he looks set to go on to the best handicap company. By Bulandshar from Proven, he may be best served by time. He is a four-year-old gelding and has proved his ability to master weight under any track conditions, so that he may be heard from before the winter is over. Due for Win

The Battle Song mare Watchword is due for a winning turn. She has been second in three of her last four appearances. On Saturday at Ashburton she was runner-up to Sylvan in the Chatmos Handicap. At the Great Autumn meeting she was second to Dark Chief in the Shirley Handicap, and in the Autumn Plate the previous day she was an unlucky second to Incentive, being beaten by half a length after being boxed in until the last 50 yards. Consistent Performer

Robin’s Reward added to his fine record when he won the Mcßae Handicap at the Egmont meeting on Saturday. He mastered top-weight of 9.10 and finished on resolutely. He has had 14 starts for two wins and eight placings this season and has proved himself one of the best handicappers in the southern part of the North Island. His other win this season was in the Manawatu Cup on December 24 last, when he won easily over 13 furlongs carrying 9.10. Robin’s Reward has proved himself well up to weight, but his opportunities are few arid far between at present. The Robin Goodfellow stallion may not do a great deal more racing before, being retired to the stud. He has won about £16,000 in stakes in a short career. Bred in Purple

Loder, who won the Sapling Stakes at the Avondale meeting on Saturday, is a black gelding by Foxbridge from Ann Acre, by Acre, tracing back to the imported mare, Miss Kate. Ann Acre has proved herself at the stud and all her foals have been brilliant in their first season or two. She has left winners in Green Gables, Bridge Acre, Al-Sirat, Lord Barwon, Foxacre and Chubin. Loder has now had three wins, the most important being the Sylvia Handicap on the fourth day of the Auckland Cup meeting, when he beat Zenith by a head in lmin 11 3-ssec for the six furlongs.
