New South Wales Retains King's Cup MELBOURNE, May 7. The New South Wales rowing eight retained the King’s Cup on the Yarra end won the right to represent Australia at the Christchurch centenary
regatta next January. New South Wales was successful for the third successive time, and Mervyn Wood won his fifth Australian Single Sculls title. New South Wales, its rating down to 32. moved through to lead Victoria at the mile, with West Australia third. Three hundred yards from the line the New South Wales rating went up to 37 and the eight crossed the line four lengths ahead of Victoria in 12min 40Jsec—56£sec faster than the 1914 race record established by Tasmania.
In the Sculls event Wood narrowly escaped defeat by the Victorian champion, Ron Rawlins. Wood led by two lengths 800 yards from the finish, but was unable to use his full strength because of cramp in his left wrist. Rawlins was only a foot behind at the finish line. Nevertheless, Wood established a new course record of 15min 30isec —lmin 38 3-10 sec faster than C. Pearce's record of 1938.
