FOOD FOR BRITAIN
Sir.—The Dunedin Community Sing Committee has decided to make its first appeals this year for food for Britain. In view of statements that our meat has been piling up in Britain, there are good people who are asking whether there is any longer need to be sending parcels of food. The committee considered this question very carefully, but came to the conclusion that there is overwhelming evidence to support the need for continuing this form of help. Literally hundreds of letters of thanks reach our secretary. They make pathetic reading, and leave no doubt as to whether or not the parcels are needed and valued. What is overlooked by those who doubt is that the parcels we send are distributed to the aged and sick and poor—in most cases to pensioners. When one considers the vast numbers of such in the large towfis of Britain it will be easily recogu lse ,^ t f hat al * tlle h e 'P w e can send will he little more than a drop in the bucket. Distribution is undertaken by councils and charitable bodies, so that the little luxuries get into the hands of the needy and deserving. Many of these letters of thanks we have distributed amongst local well-wishers, who in some cases have made personal contacts with some of the old people and thus the good work is extended. Further letters will be made available on application to the secBegg y ’and r Co F ‘ Himburgl care Charles the gifts are appreciated in the v,^- nd *v, IS * nd ‘ ca !- ed by the inaugurateoll by the Lord Mayor of London in stew £2,000,000 National ThanksStvmg Fund of which one-fifth was already in sight.
