Flooded Suburbs Of Winnipeg MORE RAIN FALLS Rec. 11 p.m. OTTAWA, May 8. The rising Red River forced hundreds of residents to flee from two more suburban areas of Winnipeg as rain fell on the stricken city tonight. The authorities said they believed the first flood crest had not yet hit Winnipeg. Meanwhile, 15.000 men and women laboured all day to strengthen the dikes along the flooded Red River as Winnipeg’s entire civid effort was diverted to flood control work. .Army “frogmen” were flown to Winnipeg from Halifax to clear obstructions in the drainage channels. Hospitals were ordered to admit only emergency cases. The Royal Canadian Air Force continued to fly in thousands of sandbags from eastern cities. More than 12.000 persons in Winnipeg and other flooded areas of Southern Manitoba have been forced from their homes. Almost all the flooding in Winnipeg is in the residential suburbs. More than 1500 persons were moved out of one area last night when 20 feet of water began to crumble a 2000 ft long dikes. The army announced today that the .entire Princess Patricia Light Infantry Regiment would be brought from Calgary to assist in flood control operations.
