Weary Residents Of Fire-ravaged City Count Their Losses

NZPA—Copyright OTTAWA, May 8. Stunned and weary residents of fireravaged Rimouski counted their losses today as the devastated areas smouldered under a light blanket of snow. Of the town’s population of 15,000, 2300 were homeless. The latest survey reported that 312 homes and 12 business, educational and religious buildings were destroyed. The damage was estimated at 20.000.000 dollars. Army and police authorities said that so far as could be learned no lives were lost. It had been reported that eight persons, including six children, had died. Red Cross workers treated scores of persons for cuts and burns. The fire, which began on Saturday night, raged for 30 hours before it was brought under control. Citizens estimated that it would take 25 years for the town to be restored.
