Educational Institute’s Efforts PRAISE FROM DIRECTOR PA WELLINGTON, May 8. Speaking at the annual conference of the New Zealand Educational Institute, the Director of Education, Dr C. E. Beeby, today praised the steps being taken by the New Zealand Educational Institute towards obtaining greater professional equality among primary, technical and secondary school teachers and the efforts being made by the institute to join by amalgamation the organisations representing those teachers. He also praised the institute’s, efforts to obtain charter and professional status. He said that anything that the institute could do to improve the responsibilities and professional status of the, teacher would have the full backing of officers of the Education Department. Discussing the proposed recognition of the profession by Act of Parliament or by charter, the Mayor, Mr W. Appleton, recommended that teachers should try to obtain a charter, as that carried more weight than incorporation by Act.
