NOVICE JUMPER
Kirkella To Be Tried Over Hurdles HORSES FOR DUNEDIN Special to the Dally Times CHRISTCHURCH, May 8. H. Nurse has made a start with the jumping education of Kirkella. Ridden by E. A. Winsloe, who came from Southland last week to join Nurse’s stable, he was given some preliminary practice this morning over the pony hurdles. He did a little schooling before he was spelled and it will be no surprise if he turns out well, as two of his half-brothers, Cottingham and Treasurer, were very good jumpers. Periwig made a good showing In his first race as a steeplechaser, when he won at Ashburton on Saturday. He will now be kept going, in preparation for a visit to Wingatui, for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting next month. A. J. Griffin will also have the veteran Roman Son for that trip, and Periwig’s programme is not really definite. There will be plenty of opportunities for him later, and his trainer will be guided by the progress he makes. Moonlit injured one of her legs when she was schooling over hurdles last week. It was not a serious mishap, and she is back in work. S. Barr hopes to have her racing at the South Canterbury meeting next week, with the Dunedin meeting to follow. Tranbycroft, who won two races at the Westport meeting, has had an easy time since he returned home. It is probable he will have his next start at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting. He is very well and he has thrown off all signs of unsoupdness. so he may go on to good class. Swayup has no engagements just now, and his future programme is uncertain. In the meantime he is doing only light exercise on the roads.
