MEN’S HOCKEY

Oamaru A’s Big Score Although the score of 9 goals to 1 in favour of Oamaru A In its match against Rovers A appeared high as hockey goes, this was in no way an indication of the run of play. In the second half Rovers reorganised its team, D. Whittaker going into the goalie position, and this cut the scoring rate considerably. Oamaru's team was further strengthened with the reappearance of W. Anderson, who previously represented North Otago in the full-back position, and at the moment the Oamaru team appears to be the best balanced in the competition. Rovers team will be strengthened as from next Saturday with the appearance of White (Waikato), who plays in the half line. The Waikato Association wrote stating that had he not moved from their district White would have been nominated for the New Zealand trials to select the team to tour Australia this season, and suggested that North Otago should forward his nomination. With his leadership the Rovers team should improve. A. Minty again played well for Oamaru A, and appears to be very fit. Goals for Oamaru were scored by E. Sherwin (2), T. Cunningham (2), Smith (3), F. Maynard and A. Minty. Rovers B sprung a surprise on Tainui A, and it was only towards the close of play that Tainui gained the lead, and added two goals to its score, making the final score: Tainui A 5, Rovers B 2. Results.—Junior: St. Patrick’s A 4, St. Patrick's B 2: St. Kevin’s 3, Oamaru 1.
