Vivanti Beats Juveniles At Oamara Meeting TE ARAWHATA SUCCESSFUL The feature of the race for the Juvenile Stakes at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday was the brilliant finish by the winner, Vivanti. Inside the final furlong Johnny Globe was clear and looking all over a winner when Vivanti was asked for an effort and the game little chestnut accelerated with amazing speed and swooped past the leader in a stride of two. In the R. A. McDowell Memorial Handicap, the first leg of the double, Te Arawhata was under a hard drive well over a furlong from home and stuck on in the gamest possible manner to fight off Desert Flight’s late challenge. ' Preston was unlucky not to pay a dividend in the second leg, C. L. Ayson Handicap, as he was out in front with Trixie Milne in the run home when he shied at a shadow and broke, causing Final Return and Grandeur to fall and Curiosity and Scottish Greetings to be pulled up. Hemisphere, the winner would, however, have been a hard horse to beat under any circumstances. He had not made up much of his handicap three furlongs from home but coming across the bend he put in a run that took him several places closer to the leaders and he finished brilliantly to be among the most impressive winners of the day. The double of Te Arawhata and Hemisphere paid £ll3 for £l. The meeting was held in fine weather but the wind had a keen edge on it. The track was firm and dust was rising in the back stretch.

Kopara Lass was the first to break the line in the R. A. McDowell Memorial Handicap but Ipso Facto took over the running within the first furlong, and was followed over the bend by Kopara Lass, Waroonga, Trouville, Gung Ho, Te Arawhata, Desert Flight, Sandy Ridge, Birthstone, and Direct Power. Green Valley broke. Into the back it was still Ipso Facto from Kopara Lass, Gung Ho, Te Arawhata, Trouville, Desert Flight, Statesman, and Sandy Ridge. Phyllis Gold put ■ a fast run from the back to follow Ipso icto into the straight for the second lime and then came Gung Ho, Te Arawhata, Kopara Lass, Desert Flight, Sandy Pudge, Statesman, and Waroonga, with Peggydale moving up. With a mile and aquarter covered Ipso Facto and Phyllis Gold were the leaders, with Kopara Lass and Te Arawhata together next and followed by Statesman and Sandy Ridge. The last named went up fast to join Phyllis Gold in the lead going through the, back stretch. Phyllis Gold did not run on and at the far turn Te Arawhata moved up to Sandy Ridge, with the order after that Statesman, Trouville, Desert Flight, and Kopara Lass. Sandy Ridge dropped out. and Te Arawhata showed the way into the straight. Responding gamely to the urgings of his driver he beat Desert Flight by a narrow margin and Trouville finished third. Then came Statesman, Birthstone, Kopara Lass, and Phyllis Gold. FINE FINISHING RUN Reay Dillon and County Sherriff broke at the start of the C. L. Ayson Handicap, the second leg of the double, and Trixie Milne began smartly to show the way out of the barrier to Squire Dillon, Preston, Tekau and Scotch Drift. With half the journey covered Trixie Milne was swinging along in front of Squire Dillon, Tekau, Preston, Green Spear, and Final Return, with Hemisphere still fairly well back. Preston and Trixie Milne were the first to head for home, with Tekau, Squire Dillon, and Final Return next and Hemisphere moving fast. When Preston broke Trixie Milne was left clear but Hem'sphere came with an irresistible run on the outer to win going away from Trixie Milne, with Squire Dillon third and Tekau fourth. The next to finish were Preston, Scotch Drift, and Joan McKinney. THE YOUNGSTERS In the Juvenile Stakes First Victory, Adorian, Lady Balfour and Flagship began slowly, and the early leaders were Dealer s Choice and Johnny Globe from Vivanti, and Blue Pietro. With half a-mile covered Blue Pietro was shading Vivanti and then came Johnny Globe, Dealer s Choice, Radiant Night Western Comet, First Victory, and Flagship. First Victory put in a fine run in the back stretch to be handy to the leaders at the three-furlong post and into the straight it was Blue Pietro and Johnny Globe from Vivanti, Dealer's Choice, First Victory Radiant Night, and Flagship. Half a furiong from home Johnny Globe was clear but Vivanti finished brilliantly to gather him in and win in most impressive style. Flagship came home strongly for third and Dealer s Choice was fourth. The next to finish were Blue Pietro, Radiant Night, First Victory and Western Comet. REMARKABLE RECOVERY Te Maru, a pronounced favourite for. the Trial Handicap No. 2, gave his at ™Y of supporters cause for concern when he broke at the end of a 'fur lo "* loot a hie stretch of ground. Rowan McCov shaded Bonus into the back, and Globe Son was moving up, the order w »th a mile covered being Rowan McCoy, Globe Son, Bonus, Jennv Dillon, M aa ]s. ? u Jf’ Dame Durdin and Courtesy. With seven furlongs to run. Norma’s Pride hit the front, to be followed through the straight bv Little Ann. Efficient, and Rear Light together, Dalesboy Shot, and Bishop’s Cleeve Running to the three, Rear Light was well clear of Little Ann, Norma’s Pride. Ptrav Shot. Efficient. Bishop’s Cleeve and Dalesboy. Rear Light was followed into the straight bv Stray Shot. Little Ann, who was weakening. Norma’s Pride, Bishop's Cleeve. and Efficient, and he was never in danger in the straight, and won bv six lengths, with Strav Shot holding on for second from Bishop’s Cleeve. Norma’s Pride was fourth ahead of Dalesboy and Efficient. PROMINENT THROUGHOUT

Having his first drive since the lifting of his disqualification, M. Holmes won the Trial Handicap No 1 with Scottish Nurse, who was one of the leaders all the way and came awav from the field about two furlongs from home for a very easy win. When the field settled down Mala took up the running to lead into the back, followed by Scottish Nurse, Validity, Attraction, terrace Lass, Grattan Arrow, Anitra Tia Maria, and Diligent. With a round 'to go Scottish Nurse was showing the way to Attraction. Grattan Arrow. Terrace Lass, and Anitra. Validity was drifting. Running to the three the order was unchanged, but Clinker Hall, Red Sea and True Dora came down, the driver of True Dora, R. K. Summerfield, being taken to hospital for observation From this stage Scottish Nurse never looked like being headed, and she went on to win from Attraction, Terrace Lass, and Diligent, with Grattan Arrow fifth ahead of Anitra, Tia Maria, and Filament
