MOBILE LIBRARY SERVICE IS TO OPERATE SHORTLY

A mobile library in the form of a converted bus of the City Transport Department will 'begin a service in Dunedin on April 17. The conversion of the bus for the purpose has been completed, and the vehicle has been painted a distinctive silver colour. An informal unveiling ” ceremony will be held on April 17 before the mobile library takes up its service.

The mobile library will operate in the Mornington, Maori Hill, Corstorphine, Anderson’s Bay, Roslyn, Forbury Corner, Kaikorai and Gardens districts, and consultations have been held by the Library Committee of the City Council with ratepayers’ associations in the city on the methods and districts in which the library will operate. In effect, the mobile library will be a library on a small scale, and it is probable that it will also operate a “ request ” service. Books required from the Dunedin Public Library by residents in the districts in which the mobile library will operate will be able to ask for certain books and these will probably be posted to them by the library staff in the main building. A charge will probably be made for postage. The mobile library .will carry about 1000 books. The Daily Times was told that basically the free books carried in the vehicle would be for women and children, such as volumes on needlework and children’s picture and story books. There would also be a good class of fiction. A rental section to suit all tastes will be incorporated in the mobile library on the same lines as in the Public Library. The service by the mobile library will be from Monday to Friday.
