The Southland Times reports that a man who recently arrived from the Nokomai speaks in glowing terms of the prospects of that goldfield. Very coarse gold is being obtained from some of the claims. Confidence in the deep lead remains unshaken. Our Hamilton correspondent informs us that he has been favoured with particulars of the amount of gold sent down by escort from Hamilton during the past 13 months, and was surprised to learn that within a few ounces of 70.000 ounces have been forwarded. “ Of course,” he says, “ this must not 1 .';be taken as the yield of Hamilton L; "alone, as Hyde and the vicinty must be credited with a portion, as also Hogburn during the last four months. " I am informed that a beautiful nugget weighing over lloz was found a .short time ago at Maori Creek, near the station of Mr Dillon Bell, in whose possession it now is.” A witness in a recent court case in Dunedin writes as follows to the Editor: “Sir, permit me through the columns of your newspaper to make public an injustice under which I, in common with others, am suffering. I was a witness in a recent case, and .’"was compelled to quit my business up * country to attend the court in Dunedin to give evidence. The requirements of my business required that I should ' return as soon as possible; but up to the present moment I have not been able to do so, in consequence of being unable to obtain the expenses due to me for attendance at the trial, and I am naturally anxious to know the reason why the money due to me is detained for so unreasonable a time. At home it would not be thought of—that a witness should be compelled to waste a fortnight before obtaining money due to him, and which in most cases but poorly recompenses him for the loss suffered in other ways.”
